All Power to You!

Four good mates share their journey with arthritis

“In March 2014, four mates from a couple of Queensland Men's Sheds came together to swap a story or two over a couple of burnt snags, share their experiences of living with various forms of arthritis, and solve the problems of the modern world…”.

These were the humble beginnings of All Power to You! A video resource for men with arthritis, developed jointly with the Queensland Men's Shed Association and Arthritis Queensland.

The video resource was developed because men were not accessing Arthritis Queensland services. Helene Frayne (Director of Arthritis Queensland) comments: “Only about 20% of our helpline callers are men so we’ve got this wonderful service, which is the helpline and women use it, but men don’t.”

This is why the Queensland Men's Shed Association was invited to get involved, sourcing the four Shedders, appearing in discussion, and distributing the video through our Website and contacts throughout the Men's Shed Movement.

The video focuses on four main types of arthritis affecting men; with each of the men sharing their own story. It covers Osteoarthritis which is the most common form, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Ankylosing Spondylitis and Gout (which is common in men).

Their sense of humour shines through their personal stories as they relay what they have learnt to assist them to live a positive life with arthritis. Their Men’s Sheds have played an important part in this journey helping the men to stay active and make connections that help them to work through the challenges.

The video also has broader messages for health and well being as men age.

There are also other messages which include the psychological impact of living with pain and the social benefits of being a member of a shed.  There is a very strong health and wellbeing message about exercise and having a good balanced diet.”

“Arthritis Queensland aims to support all Queenslanders. They don’t have the resources to regularly go to Cairns or Charters Towers or Mt Isa. But because the video is available online, all men in Queensland can look at that video and get the very strong health and wellbeing messages"
